- <p> DIED. ERWIN KNOLL, 63, author and editor of the Progressive;
- of a heart attack; in Madison, Wisconsin. The amiably combative
- Knoll spent 21 years at the helm of the proudly left-wing but
- nondoctrinaire monthly, frequently appearing as a commentator
- on the MacNeil/Lehrer News-Hour. An evangelist for the First
- Amendment, Knoll crossed swords with the Federal Government
- when he sought to demonstrate, by publishing some of the information,
- how easy it would be to build an H-bomb from unclassified sources.
- The U.S. obtained a restraining order against the Progressive
- but dropped the case when the facts appeared elsewhere. Knoll
- ran his article.
